Our plea for you to get yourself a proper sports bra isn’t about us selling you something. Obviously we’d quite like to do that, but we actually want to stop you doing yourself some permanent damage. Breasts have no muscle in them so, as you probably know already, they tend to bounce uncomfortably if you haven’t got them strapped down properly. What you might not realise is that uncontrolled movement stretches the Cooper’s Ligaments – and when these stretch, your breasts can start to droop. If you want to see for yourself, leading sports bra manufacturer Shock Absorber have put together a bounceometer demo here
A good sports bra will not only help protect your assets; it will make physical activity a lot more comfortable. Sports bras come in two main types – the flatten them down, compression type or the type that separates your breasts. Neither is particularly glamorous unfortunately but they should both stop any untoward movement. It really comes down to personal preference and which feels more comfortable.
A sports bra may well feel firmer than you’re used to, but you don’t want to feel squashed. Equally, you don’t want to feel that you can move the bra easily - an indication of inadequate support. The material should be smooth with no rough seams to chafe your skin. It should also be ‘wicking’ which means that when you sweat, the material should help you keep cooler and slightly drier than normal.
When you get your new sports bra, try it on – with the labels – and test it out by moving around. Try a few jumps to see how much bounce your breasts have and hopefully they won’t be moving too much. When you’re on the more-endowed side it’s very difficult to stop them bouncing completely but we’ve road-tested every sports bra we stock in a variety of sizes including 32G and 38FF and all of us have been able to go out running without fear of a black-eye or scaring small children!
